I. We assume
all prospective Turtles own a Jack Ass. This
assumption is the reason for the password. This password
must
be given if you are ever asked by a fellow member, "Are you A
Turtle?" You MUST then reply, "with the secret password."
If you do not give the password in full because of embarrassment
or some other reason, you forfeit a beverage of his choice. So
always remember the password given to you at your iniation!
II. To become an official
Turtle you must first solve the following riddles:
1. What is it that a man can do standing up, a women sitting
down,
and a dog on three legs?
2. What is it that a cow has four of and a woman has only
two
of?
3. What is a four-letter word ending in "K" that means the
same
as intercourse?
4. What is it on a man that is round, hard and sticks so
far
out of
his pajamas you can hang a hat on it?
TURTLE CREED
Turtles are
bright
eyed, bushy tailed, fearless and unafraid folk with a fighter pilot
attitude.
They think clean, have fun a
lot, and recognize the fact that you never get any place worthwhile
in life unless you stick your neck out.
The "Turtles"
are indeed an illustrious group and include in their membership ranks
some
of the country's foremost
leaders in the fields of government, finance, entertainment, aerospace
and all other areas where aggressiveness, a feeling for fair
play, clean thoughts and a sense of humor are keys to success.
Started by a
group of test pilots during the 2nd war, the club has progressed to its
present position as one whose
membership is diligently sought after and highly esteemed by those
lucky enough to be initiated. Adherence to the creed and
always giving the password when asked are the only
responsibilities
placed on our membership. You will find that life is more
fun and takes on new meaning when you are a "Turtle". Welcome
to the group.

I became a turtle on March 11, 1990 on a trip to Montreal
Canada.
We were
leaving Boston to celebrate St. Patrick's Day in Montreal and watch
the
Bruins play. My card has an additional phrase on the bottom that
requires
all turtles to send holiday Greeting Cards to the Big Snapper, a Man
by
the name of Samuel Johnson. I'm wondering if anyone else has
this type of
a card.

My

Hi, I was initiated (or at least I got
my card from) Lloyd D.
Hardesty, probably back in the late 60s. I've since searched
for my
actual card, and I think it got so ratty that I had to throw the pieces
of
it away long ago. Do you know of a place where I could get a
new one?

Howdy,
I became a Turtle in 1990 in Chicago. I lost my card (however I know
I'm
still a turtle ... that is to say "you bet your sweet ass I am" ...
how is
your jackass by the way?). Anyway, I searched for Turtles using Google
'cause I'd like to get some membership cards to sign up other members.
We've given the test before and initiated new Turtles but it just
doesn't
have the same impact without the cards. I know I wouldn't even remember
I
was made a Turtle that night if it weren't for the card I was given
(signed by another card carrying Turtle). Is there an official card
or did
this Turtle chick just print up her own? Any
insight?
Thanks, Dave Thum <hoohaaa@hotmail.com>

The chant is "You gotta stick your neck out if you wanna get

I first became a Turtle in Kilgore Texas in 1966. The Turtle
Club
was going the rounds in the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) and we
were
on a Sports Car Rally when we were made turtles. We, my Wife Mary and I
have made many friends Turtles, the last of which was this past
year.
I still have a few cards and am always ready to initiate a new member.
There was one extra question in the initiation not on my card. The
correct
answer made you an Imperial Turtle, and entitled you to initiate new
Turtles.
Question: What is it a young girl MUST have that is essential to her
social life? The first letter is P, the fourth letter is S, and it ends
in Y?
Ok I know that one .. any more Imperials
out
there?? ly
Hi fellow turtles!
I am a third generation turtle, from stratford ontario originally,
and
follow faithfully in my parents and grandparents turtle steps. my
parents
were very faithful to the international association of turtles inc, and
spoke often of the creed during their 1960's cocktail parties. i was
originally
made a member unofficially by my parents, but rec'd my official
membership
card on 8/14/85, at the young age (for a turtle) of 28. i have
heard
reference to 'turtles ' in my home of london ontario over the years,
and
would like to hear more, or perhaps find out if there is a local
chapter.
perhaps UWO has an ongoing group? or perhaps we'd better get one
going in London!!
I heard about the turtle society from a friend, who also happens to
be an alumni of my college. I want to join the society, so I searched
for
you on the web. (My friend couldn't remember all the questions) Am I a
turtle now? Have I been initiated? Do I get a card?
(she gave me the answer to all the questions....now if we only had a
card )
Awaiting your reply, Kristina

Hi Bro Lyman,
You are the best !!!!! I
would be thrilled to wear the turtle pin
.
I think I was initiated as a turtle my freshman year at UNC in
1961.
I'm not exactly sure if it was 61 or 62. I just remember they
were
some of the best and most fun years of my life. I am happily
married
to a turtle and just recently we have started asking our peers, who are
relatively new acquaintances here in Florida, if they are part of that
elite group. We have not thought about being a turtle in many
years.
I know none of our children, who are in their 30's, ever mentioned
being
turtles. Isn't it amazing that something so simple could be so
much
fun.
I became a Turtle in 1968 while visiting friends in the Upper
Peninsula
of Michigan. It was a solemn occaison, as the keg was nearly
empty
and the snow outside was about 5 feet deep. I'm sure my
membership
in the Turtles was pivitol in my reaching civilization at the end of my
journeys. Heres to safe journey for all Turtles!

Question. To what organization do and did Johnny
Carson, Dean Martin, Lonesome George Gobel, and former astronaut Wally
Schirra belong? I'll tell you a little about the organization...and
about a mystery clock designed by Cartier in 1943 which symbolizes the
source from which the above named organization got its name. I'll give
you a couple of clues along the way.
So...our organization was founded in 1931. Clue number uno...the name
is derived from a living animal. The creed of the members of this
organization is simple. The philosophy is as follows: The members are
bushy-tailed, bright-eyed, fearless and possess a fighter pilot
attitude. They think clean, have a lot of fun, and recognize the simple
truth that states you will never accomplish anything worthwhile in life
unless you stick your neck out.
Clue number two lies in the last part of the last sentence of the
second paragraph. You folks like cryptic and enigmatic clues? Hmmm? Our
organization sponsors a multitude of festivals...all deriving their
name from the animal which so gallantly allowed them to use its name
for their purposes. A lifetime membership to our organization costs
$1.00 and is good for one hundred years. After that...you have to renew
and pay an additional fee. Our organization has over 5.5 million card
carrying members.
Clue number three: Run to your dictionary...look up Chelonia...and if
it's a good dictionary...you will have your animal. He symbolizes
persistence and endurance and wisdom. In a Swahili song, our beastie
sings: "I move house and yet I never move house; I am at home wherever
I travel." In Chinese symbolism our creature supports the world and
it's feet represent the four corners of the earth. In Japanese lore it
supports the cosmic mountain. In Amerindian myth, the cosmic tree grows
out of its back. It is also associated with fertility.
And last but not least, our little critter was immortalized by a famous
Greek slave of the 6th century B.C. who went by the name of Aesop and
who wrote a little parable entitled: The Tortoise and the Hare. Our
creature folks...is none other than the lowly turtle. The organization
to which our illustrious panel belongs and belonged is called: Turtles
International Association, Ltd. And Cartier designed a clock in 1943
entitled the Turtle-Chimaera Mystery Clock, which I scanned for you all
to see. It's a delight. So then...for those of you who are new...to my
home page as quickly as your fingers can skim a keyboard...scroll down
the table menu till you see Tidbits Graphics...and click on Turtle.

became a member in 1971
at a now defunct watering hole-in-the-wall called The
Escapade in La Habra Calif. I was initiated by my then
soon-to-be and now ex-husband Jim Roche. My current
husband, Ken Miles Krug, became a turtle in 1972 at
Petes Bar in Bad Axe, Mich. He was initiated by Mike
Hamburg, who also made Miles a Grand Poo-Bah. I dont
know if thats the same as an Imperial Turtle, but he
was given authority to recruit new members. Now, like
so many others who wrote to this site, his own
membership card is so tattered it cannot be read
anymore, and he long ago ran out of the 20 or so cards
he origianlly had to give out to new recruits. I saw a
link from your page to a web-site that sells
membership cards, but I cant make a direct e-mail link
from it with my computer (its too old and feeble). So,
could somebody give me an e-mail (or even snail-mail)
address to write to so we can obtain new cards?

Dear Fellow Turtle,
I am the "LA LA, Grand Poo Pah, Master Imperial Turtle, of
The Virgin Islands"
I have made over two thousand Imperial Turtles in my "Turtlehood"
I have handed out certificates of membership and loved all that I have
met along the perfected path.
I know of only six Master Imperial turtles( made 500 or more members).
Dallas Allice, made me a turtle in 1989 St Thomas, VI. I will never
forget her.
God bless you my fellow Turtles as "YOU BET YOUR SWEET ASS I AM" Love
to All, Lyman,
I am a second generation Turtle having been initiated a Turtle by my
Dad, an aerospace engineer with Rockwell for 30 years, shortly after my
21st birthday in 1976. My membership card was long ago
ceremonially burned (like a flag) when it no longer held together and
was unreadable. Like many on this site, I am interested in
obtaining a new card.
Keep sticking your neck out,

I haven't met any other turtles. I've tried to initiate some
